Donald Trump can't run for US presidency, Colorado Supreme Court rules

The ruling from the Court, means Trump will be ineligible to stand for presidency in the Colorado state.

The court, whose justices were all appointed by Democrat governors, has now removed Trump from the state's presidential primary ballot.

So, as it stands, voters in Colorado won’t be able to choose Trump in the presidential election next year.

The court ruled, in a 4-3 decision, that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment prevents Donald Trump from being president again because, they argue, he incited the supporters who stormed the Capitol almost three years ago.

Section 3 of the 14th amendment bars anyone from the Office of President who swore an oath to "support" the Constitution and then "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against it.

Trump lost Colorado by 13 percentage points in 2020 and doesn't need the state to win next year's presidential election.

The ruling does not prevent him from running across the rest of the US - but the danger for Trump will be if more courts and officials follow Colorado's lead and exclude Trump from ‘must-win’ states.
